Mr. VanderWaal is a partner in the firm. His practice includes general civil litigation with a focus in the areas of condemnation, property tax litigation, public construction disputes, real estate litigation including boundary disputes, surveying disputes, and zoning matters.
Mr. VanderWaal further represents and advises clients in the area of municipal law. As the attorney for many cites, town, villages and multijurisdictional municipal entities Mr. VanderWaal has handled all aspects of municipal law including: drafting ordinances, resolutions, contracts and agreements; representing municipalities in all court proceedings, including federal and state court and administrative agencies; municipal prosecutions; Open Meeting and Open Record Law compliance; licensing matters; employee discipline and termination; employment discrimination charges; grievance arbitration; and public sector collective bargaining.
Mr. VanderWaal also has an extensive appellate litigation practice successfully arguing before both the Wisconsin Court of Appeals and the Wisconsin Supreme Court. His reported decisions include Pace v. Oneida County, 212 Wis.2d 448, 569 N.W.2d 311 (Ct. App. 1997); In Re Paternity of RJW, 218 Wis.2d 255, 578 N.W.2d 185 (1998); Society Ins. v. Linehan, 238 Wis.2d 359, 616 N.W.2d 918 (Ct. App. 2000); Trailwood Ventures, LLC v. Village of Kronenwetter, 2009 WI App 18, 315 Wis.2d 791, 762 N.W.2d 841; Klemm v. American Transmission Co., 2011 WI 37, 333 Wis.2d 580, 798 N.W.2d 223; Nowell v. City of Wausau, 2012 WI App 100, 344 Wis.2d 269, 823 N.W.2d 373.
Mr. VanderWaal graduated from the University of Minnesota-Duluth with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1989 and received his Juris Doctorate from Hamline University School of Law in 1992.
Mr. VanderWaal is a member of the Wisconsin Bar Association and Marathon County Bar Association. Mr. VanderWaal also is admitted to practice in the United States District Court, Eastern District and Western District.
